Leading a Digital Project? Think Like a Farmer

Leadership has already filled libraries of books. Yet, it remains a constantly relevant topic - especially in the context of digital transformation, where the pace of change is rapid, and the pressure to perform is even greater. In this environment, we expect quick results, immediate impact, and fast growth.

But what if... as a leader, you started thinking and acting more like a farmer?

That may sound odd. What do fields and algorithms have in common? Yet, just like in agriculture, successful leadership in digital projects requires patience, timing, care, and the understanding that growth can’t be forced:

  • Don’t shout at the crops
Approach challenges and setbacks calmly and thoughtfully.

  • Don't blame the crops for not growing fast enough
Success or failure is the responsibility of the entire team - including the team leader.

  • Don't uproot crops before they've had the chance to grow and mature
Give your team members the time and space to develop and grow into their roles.

  • Choose the best plants for the soil
Consider the skills, experience, and personality of potential team members. Do they align with your project goals?

  • Irrigate and fertilise
Support your team - through training, development opportunities, and the right tools and resources.

  • Remove weeds
Don’t hesitate to tackle issues proactively. Act before they escalate.

  • Remember you will have good and bad seasons – you can’t control the weather, only be prepared for it
Think long-term. Acknowledge that ups and downs are inevitable. By staying prepared and flexible, your team will be able to perform well - even in tougher times.
